country to adopt a constitution that expressly guarantees protection
from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. Now South
Africa is rolling out the rainbow carpet in celebration of its
liberation.

Out in Africa: The Joys of Jo Burg
Think
remote—even obscure. Far removed from war and terrorism, South Africa
is emerging as one of the more popular overseas destinations,
especially among gay and lesbian travelers. South Africa’s constitution,
ratified in 1995, bans discrimination based on sexual orientation,
making it one of the most liberal constitutions in the world.

Cape
Town
At
first I thought local gays, or “moffies” as they call themselves, were
pulling my leg when they called their city La La Land! But I soon
learned they weren’t even aware that gays call Los Angeles the same
thing. In both cases La La Land is that place just over the
rainbow, where the muscular, the sun tanned and beautiful
frolic in the surf and sun.

Out
in Africa: The Joys of Jo Burg
In South Africa’s heart there exists an optimistic
spirit still struggling to fully emerge from the hangover of apartheid.
This is a country of extremes, of people coming to terms with the demons
of their past while simultaneously living in the joy of the present
moment. Breathtaking scenery, impeccable hospitality, and a dizzyingly
favorable exchange rate make it an impossible destination to pass
up.
